lifesaverAccording to Sheriff Jeffrey J. Murphy, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office was called to assist with a missing 75-year-old man with dementia off County Route 10 in the Town of Whitehall. As part of the response, the Sheriff’s Office sent a K-9 team and a Deputy specially trained with tracking equipment after it was learned that the missing man was registered with the Sheriff’s Office’s Project Lifesaver Program.

Upon arriving at the location, deputies were told that the man had wandered off into a wooded area behind a residence. Deputy Travis Earl and K9 Brucha began tracking in an area where the man was last seen in an attempt to locate the man by scent and Deputy John LaTour began searching utilizing the Project Life Saver tracking equipment which detects pings from the man’s transmitter.

The searching patterns were similar by the K9 and tracking equipment and the man was located uninjured just after 4:30 P.M. about 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile into the woods near some water.

The Project Lifesaver program is a national program used to help find missing patients suffering from, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, autism, Down’s Syndrome, and other cognitive disorders.

A Project Lifesaver client has an electronic tracking device about the size of a wristwatch that is attached and with them at all times. If the client goes missing, law enforcement will be able to track them within a one-mile radius on the ground and a five-mile radius with a special antenna through a unique radio frequency specific to that client’s device. The client’s frequency is programmed into the receiver and deputies begin following pings from the transmitter.

The New York State Police also assisted.
