Sheriff advises against any unnecessary travel during storm

Sheriff Jeff Murphy is advising against any unnecessary travel as winter storm Stella continues to impact Washington County and the surrounding area.

Governor Cuomo has issued a state of emergency for the entire State of New York and Washington County has sent home civilian employees due to the deteriorating conditions.  The Sheriff's Office administrative offices will be closed for the remainder of the day.

The National Weather Service is advising snowfall rates of 1 to 4 inches per hour are possible at times during the height of the storm. Strong winds, 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are possible and could cause near-blizzard or blizzard conditions.

The weight of the snow on branches and power lines in combination with the strong winds may lead to scattered power outages in areas. 18 to 24 inches of snow is expected, with higher amounts possible across higher terrain.

Residents are urged to check on their neighbors particularly the elderly. Please bring your pets inside and stay home if you can.
